US weekly chemical railcar traffic rises 6.0% year over year

TORONTO (ICIS)--Chemical shipments on US railroads rose 6.0% last week from the same period in 2009, a rail industry group said on Thursday, marking their 39th increase so far this year.
Chemical railcar loadings for the week ended 9 October were 28,013, up by 1,589 carloads from 26,424 in the same week last year, according to the Association of American Railroads (AAR).
The increase compared with a 6.7% increase in the previous week ended 2 October.
The weekly chemical railcar loadings data are an important real-time measure of chemical industry activity and demand. Railcar loadings represent about 20% of US chemical volumes by tonnage, with trucks, barges and pipelines carrying the rest.
