LONDON (ICIS)--LANXESS has started production at a new high-quality black iron oxide pigments unit at its Jinshan site in Shanghai, China, the German specialty chemicals company said on Tuesday.

The 10,000 tonnes/year of black iron oxides capacity is in addition to the existing 28,000 tonnes/year of high-quality yellow iron oxides produced at the site.

LANXESS Inorganic Pigments started production in Shanghai in 1996. In 2008 it acquired the manufacturing site for iron oxide pigments in Jinshan, and the first phase of technical improvements was completed in April.

The company said the second phase was scheduled for completion in 2011.

It did not say how much it had invested in the improvements.

The company added that the rise in demand for inorganic pigments in China was mainly driven by urbanisation, which had led to a boom in the construction and paint industries.

LANXESS said its new facility would also set high standards of environmental protection by recycling by-products from other processes into high-quality black iron oxide pigments.

It is also equipped with an ultra-modern wastewater treatment facility that is directly linked to an industrial water treatment plant, the company said.

Iron oxide is used in the construction industry and the paint and coating sector, as well as the plastics and paper industries.

The Inorganic Pigments business unit belongs to the LANXESS Performance Chemicals segment, which achieved total sales of €1.53bn ($2.13bn) in the fiscal year 2009.

($1 = €0.72)
