APLA '10: Solar modules boosting demand for EVA, VAM in China

RIO DE JANEIRO (ICIS)--Growing consumption of ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) by China's solar-power industry as an encapsulant for solar modules is strengthening demand for feedstock vinyl acetate monomer (VAM), an acetyls source said on Sunday.

EVA makes up 80-90% of the solar encapsulant market, and China has one of the world’s major solar markets.

EVA producer Solutia cited an industry report as saying China demand for EVA encapsulants was projected to almost triple by 2015 from its 2009 levels.

Polyvinyl butyral (PVB) another VAM end use, is seeing increased demand from automobile production, which uses the material to make windows, the source said on the sidelines of the 30th Latin American Petrochemical Association (APLA) annual meeting in Rio de Janeiro.

The 2010 APLA conference opened on Sunday in Rio de Janeiro with nearly 800 delegates and runs through Tuesday.
