LONDON (ICIS)--Polimeri Europa has switched on its selective toluene disproportionation (TDP) unit at Priolo, ?xml:namespace>
Production at the unit, which makes benzene and paraxylene (PX) from toluene, started at the beginning of November, the source said.
The unit was producing 60% PX and 40% benzene. The PX was being used to cover contractual volumes while the benzene was solely for captive use, the source said.
The source added that the decision to switch on the unit was based on current market economics and the balance of benzene in Europe.
The declaration of force majeure at Petrogal’s benzene, toluene and xylenes (BTX) unit at Oporto, Portugal, was keeping European PX supply limited, while demand from the derivative purified terephthalic acid (PTA) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET) markets remained strong.
ICIS assessed current European toluene spot values at $940-970/tonne (€686-708/tonne) FOB (free on board)
($1 = €0.73)
