TOKYO (ICIS)--Japanese chemical producer Sumitomo Chemical said on Thursday it plans to build a 40,000 tonne/year solution styrene butadiene rubber (S-SBR) plant in Jurong Island, Singapore, taking into account Asia's growing demand for tyres.

The unit was scheduled to start commercial production in the fourth quarter of 2013, the company said in a statement.

The plant was going to be Sumitomo Chemical’s first-ever S-SBR manufacturing facility in Singapore, and the producer planned to spend “over yen (Y) 10bn ($120m)” to build it, said a company official, who declined to be named.

Demand for S-SBR was rapidly increasing for use in high-performance fuel-efficient tyres in China, India, Thailand and elsewhere in Asia, Sumitomo Chemical said.

Sumitomo Chemical has an existing 10,000 tonne/year S-SBR plant in Ichihara, Chiba prefecture that would continue to produce S-SBR for the Japanese market. The new unit in Singapore would cater to the Asian market, the company official said.
