MOSCOW (ICIS)--Russia's Balakovo Mineral Fertilizers has started operating a new 650,000 tonne/year sulphuric acid production facility, the company said on Thursday.

The rouble (Rb) 2.6bn ($83m, €63m) project has increased the plant's sulphuric acid capacity to 1.9m tonnes/year, the company said.

Balakovo Mineral Fertilizers, based in the Saratov region of central Russia, is controlled by Russia's Phosagro holding company.

Phosagro also controls Azot Cherepovets and Ammophos, based in the Vologda region of northern Russia, and the Apatit mining company in northern Russia.

Earlier this year, Phosagro indicated tentative plans to hold an initial public offering in late 2011 or early 2012.
