HOUSTON (ICIS)--Solutia plans to upgrade its polyvinyl butyral (PVB) plant in Gent, Blegium, allowing the site to produce interlayers used to sound-proof windows in automobiles, the company said on Wednesday.
When the project is completed, the Ghent plant will produce multi-layer rolls of Saflex Q series advanced acoustic PVB sheets, the company said.
Not only do the PVB interlayers dampen outside noise, they also allow automakers to use less glass, Solutia said. As a result, automakers can reduce the weight of a vehicle by up to 10.5kg.
Earlier this year, Solutia expanded its third extrusion line at the Gent plant, allowing it to produce 3.2-metre wide PVB interlayer, to be used to make windows for buildings.
