LONDON (ICIS)--Clariant will spend €50m ($67m) to expand its global research and development (R&D) activities at its site in Frankfurt, Germany, the Swiss specialty chemicals company said on Wednesday.

The planned innovation centre was planned to be located on 23,000 m2 in the Frankfurt-Hochst Industrial Park and was due to be completed by the end of 2012, it added.

Clariant said it would provide space for 500 people.

The new innovation centre would cooperate with all of Clariant’s R&D satellite sites in Gendorf near Munich, Germany, Lamotte in France and Suzano in Brazil, as well as 40 application centres around the globe, the group added.

Clariant said it had invested well over Swiss francs (Swfr) 130m (€101m, $135m) in R&D in 2010.

“After the completion of the successful restructuring, innovation in combination with an increased strategic focus on profitable growth will be a key cornerstone for our company,” said Hariolf Kottmann, chief executive officer at Clariant.

“The goal is to establish Clariant as an innovation leader in the field of specialty chemicals within the next few years,” he added.

“Our product innovations will also address current megatrends such as renewable energies, energy efficiency and renewable resources with a view to opening up new business opportunities beyond current markets,” said Christian Kohlpaintner, an executive committee member for Clariant responsible for R&D.
