SAO PAULO (ICIS)--Brazil’s caustic-soda consumption from January through November increased 7.9% year on year, the country’s chlor-alkali trade group, Abiclor, said on Thursday.

The group attributed the increase to higher demand from Brazil’s chemical and petrochemical sector as well as its pulp and paper sector.

Domestic production of caustic soda in the period increased only 2.5% - held down by a 2.8% growth in demand for chlorine, according to the association.

Most of the nation's demand for caustic soda was met by imports, which increased 16.6% in the first 11 months of 2010, the association added.

Domestic production of chlorine also increased 2.8% from January through November, Abiclor said.

Abiclor did not release tonnage figures.
