US EPA, Europe’s ECHA form cooperative partnership

HOUSTON (ICIS)--The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) have formed a partnership to cooperate with each other and exchange information on chemical management, the EPA said on Friday.

The partnership was announced at a meeting of the Transatlantic Economic Council (TEC) in Washington.

A statement of intent regarding the partnership “puts in place a process for working together on a range of issues of mutual interest including toxicity testing, the hazard- and risk-assessment of chemicals, risk-management tools, scientific collaboration and information exchange”, the EPA said.

“One of the major anticipated areas of collaboration will be on the exchange of data and information,” the EPA said. The agreement would promote the exchange of non-confidential information on hazards, uses and substance identification between ECHA and EPA, including data collected under the EU’s Reach chemical management programme.

The two agencies would also share criteria for managing confidential business information with the goal to increase the availability of chemical information to the public, the EPA said.
