MOSCOW (ICIS)--The State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR) plans to increase the country's polymer production capacities, it said on Tuesday.

Polyethylene (PE) capacity at Azerbaijan's state-run petrochemical holding Azerikimya would be raised from 200,000 tonnes/year to 350,000 tonnes/year, SOCAR said.

Polypropylene (PP) capacity would also rise, from 200,000 tonnes/year to 320,000 tonnes/year. SOCAR did not disclose further details of the plans.

After taking over Azerikimya in April 2010, SOCAR pledged to increase Azerikimya's C2 and C3 capacities by two to three times and upgrade its existing petrochemical capacities in Sumgait.

SOCAR also aims to build a new refinery and a new gas processing plant in Sangachal, close to the capital Baku.

The 15m tonne/year refinery and the 40 billion cubic metres/year gas processing plant are expected to be on stream by 2019,  SOCAR said.
