SHANGHAI (ICIS)--China’s largest methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) producer Yantai Wanhua Polyurethanes said on Thursday that it has started commercial production at its new MDI plant and auxiliary units in Ningbo, Zhejiang province.

The new complex houses a 300,000 tonne/year MDI plant, a 240,000 tonne/year formaldehyde unit, a 360,000 tonne/year aniline facility and a 150,000 tonne/year caustic soda plant, Yantai Wanhua said in a statement to the Shanghai Stock Exchange.

The company had begun conducting test runs at the plants in mid-November.

Yantai Wanhua has a total MDI nameplate capacity of 800,000 tonnes/year. The company also runs a 200,000 tonne/year unit in Yantai, Shandong province, and another 300,000 tonne/year plant in Ningbo.

MDI is used in the manufacture of polyurethane foam, which is used in various products including automobiles and refrigerators.
