China’s Shenhua eyes 1 Jan commercial ops at Baotou CTO complex

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--China’s Shenhua Baotou Coal Chemical Co plans to start commercial production at its new coal-to-olefins (CTO) complex in northern Inner Mongolia on 1 January, a company source said on Friday.

The complex in Baotou includes a 1.8m tonne/year coal-based methanol unit, a 600,000 tonne/year methanol-to-olefins (MTO) facility, a 300,000 tonne/year polyethylene (PE) unit and a 300,000 tonne/year polypropylene (PP) plant.

“We have set the date of the commercial production at 1 January. All the plants are running very well currently after recent maintenance,” the source told ICIS, but declined to provide details on the current operating rates of the PP and PE plants.

Shenhua Baotou was scheduled to produce 450,000 tonnes of polyolefins next year, the source said.

The company is a subsidiary of China’s largest coal producer Shenhua Group Corp.
