Preparations for International Year of Chemistry underway

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Dow Chemical is planning extensive involvement in the International Year of Chemistry events starting this month, the company said on Thursday.

Opening ceremonies for the designated year were planned for 27-28 January at the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) headquarters in Paris and for 1 February at the Chemical Heritage Foundation headquarters at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, among others, Dow said.

In addition to speaking engagements and sponsoring exhibits at the global and US launch ceremonies, Dow said it would participate in a series of global and regional events that have both direct and indirect ties to the International Year of Chemistry.

All of the programmes would be aimed at increasing public appreciation of chemistry, encouraging interest in chemistry among young people and generating enthusiasm for the future of the science, Dow said.

Planned International Year of Chemistry events included the world’s largest gathering of Nobel laureates in July at the 43rd IUPAC (International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry) World Chemistry Congress in Puerto Rico; a year-long project uniting students around the globe to test the water quality where they live to share and compare their findings; and the closing event in December in Brussels, Belgium.
