Canada ethanol maker Enerkem gets $80m for US project

HOUSTON (ICIS)--Canadian ethanol firm Enerkem received an $80m (€59m) loan guarantee from the US government, the company said on Thursday, adding that funds would be used to build a waste-to-biofuels plant in Pontotoc, Mississippi.

The facility will initially produce 10m gal/year (38m litres/year) of ethanol using municipal solid waste as a feedstock, the company said.

The plant is expected to begin operations in 2012, according to information on Enerkem’s website.

The loan guarantee came from the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and followed an award of up to $50m from the Department of Energy (DOE) for the same facility in 2009.

Enerkem did not provide further financial details, but in 2009 the company said total investments in the Pontotoc project were estimated at $250m.
