SINGAPORE (ICIS)--South Korean aromatics and styrene monomer (SM) producer Samsung Total is expected to start a scheduled turnaround at a Daesan-based benzene unit at the end of April, an industry source said on Monday.

The 280,000 tonne/year benzene unit would be down for a month and the shutdown was in line with a turnaround at the company’s downstream SM unit, the source added.

The company also operates a 470,000 tonne/year benzene plant in Daesan that would not have any scheduled shutdown this year, the source said.

Samsung Total uses all its benzene supply for SM production.

Other major benzene and SM producers in South Korea include LG Chem and SK Energy.
