LONDON (ICIS)--China Chemical has started production at its expanded maleic anhydride (MA) plant at Zibo City, in China's Shandong province, the company said on Tuesday.

The company’s new 30,000 tonne/year MA plant, which doubles its overall production of the material to 60,000 tonnes/year, has completed its testing phase and has begun production, China Chemical said.

“We constructed the facility to meet the growing demand for chemicals in China's manufacturing sector, which is being fuelled by increasing domestic consumption,” said China Chemical chairman and CEO Lu Feng.

“With the new facility, we expect to generate additional revenues from the increased production of MA as well as its byproducts, steam and acid water,” he added.

The company also started site development in October last year for a 50,000 tonne/year 1,4 butanediol (BDO) co-generation plant.

The BDO plant is scheduled for completion in 2012.
