SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals has switched to 100% methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) production at its 30,000 tonne/year swing plant in Iwakuni, Yamaguchi prefecture, since 25 January, a company source said on Wednesday.

Output from the plant was earlier evenly split between MIBK and methyl isobutyl carbinol (MIBC), he added.

It is a usual practice for Mitsui to produce other solvents such as MIBC several times a year.

MIBK spot prices rose $20-30/tonne (€15-22/tonne) to $1,730-1,750/tonne CFR China on the back of a higher-priced fixture and buy-sell discussions during last week, and also due to firm feedstock acetone costs, market sources said.

Feedstock acetone spot prices were up $20-50/tonne at $920-1,010/tonne CFR China Main Port last week, underpinned by limited supply and a bullish outlook.
