HOUSTON (ICIS)--US January auto sales of passenger cars and light trucks increased by 17.3% year on year, according to sales data released on Tuesday.

The US automobile industry is a major demand segment for chemicals such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), nylon 6,6 and several other synthetic fibres and paints and coatings.

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) estimates that each automobile contains an average of $2,700 (€1,971) worth of chemicals.

Total sales for January were at 819,895 units, up from 698,781 units in 2010, according to Autodata. Each of the six largest manufacturers in the US market – General Motors, Ford, Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Chrysler – reported double-digit increases in sales.

The biggest improvements came from General Motors and Chrysler, each reporting an increase of 22.7%.

“January was a good month and signalled a solid start to the new year for each of our divisions,” said Don Johnson, a GM vice president. “Our results were driven by gains across the board in all segments, with our newest models leading the way.”

The rest posted increases of 13–18% in January.

Auto sales for manufacturers outside of the six largest jumped 16.3% year on year to 180,018 units in January 2011, up from 154,838 units in January 2010, Autodata said.

Month-on-month data showed a decline of 28.3%, or 324,844 units, in total sales, as December 2010 sales were at 1,144,739 units, Autodata said.

The month-on-month sales for the largest six decreased by 30%, with the biggest declines coming from Honda and Toyota. However, December sales were bolstered by holiday buying patterns, and January had three fewer sales days.
