Canada’s Agrium says warehouse damaged by fire

HOUSTON (ICIS)--A fire heavily damaged a storage warehouse at Agrium’s Hartsville, South Carolina, NPK Rainbow Fertilizer plant on Monday, the company said on Tuesday.

The fire affected the storage facility that housed about 17,000 tonnes of dry finished fertilizer and raw materials, Canada-based Agrium said.

Fire-fighting units from three surrounding counties and 12 departments were called to battle the blaze, local sources said.

Agrium’s Hartsville operation has the capacity to produce 78,400 tonnes/year of NPK fertilizer.

The company said it was working with the South Carolina State Department of Health and Environmental Control (DHEC) to monitor any impacts to air and water in the surrounding area, and also had brought in environmental consultants to support its efforts.

“Customer needs will be met through our Americus, Georgia, and Florence, Alabama, facilities,” Agrium said in a statement.

The facility and product were insured, and as a result, there is not expected to be any material financial impact on Agrium, the company said.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation, and Agrium said it was working with the appropriate regulatory agencies.
