Neste-Bapco base oils plant in Bahrain to start up in autumn 2011

LONDON (ICIS)--Neste Oil’s Group III joint-venture base oils plant with Bahrain Petroleum Co (Bapco) is expected to come on stream in the autumn of 2011, a Neste Oil official said on Thursday.

Construction of the 400,000 tonne/year plant in Sitra, Bahrain, was 96% complete and the logistics infrastructure to support the plant was also in place, said Matti Lehmus, Neste Oil’s executive vice president of oil products and renewable fuels.

Lehmus was speaking at the 15th ICIS World Base Oils & Lubricants Conference in London.

Lehmus did not disclose any financial details about the Bahrain plant's construction.

Neste Oil already produces Group III base oils at its 250,000 tonne/year plant in Porvoo, Finland.

Lehmus said that with demand for Group III base oils growing at 10% per year, there was a need to increase capacity to ensure global availability.

Group III base oils are used to manufacture top-tier engine oils and lubricants.

This year's ICIS World Base Oils & Lubricants Conference runs from 24-25 February.
