SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Japan’s Mitsui Chemicals is running its 90,000 tonne/year bisphenol A (BPA) plant in Chiba prefecture at full rates post earthquake, a company source said on Monday.

Mitsui Chemicals operates two upstream phenol-acetone facilities in Chiba. One plant can produce 190,000 tonnes/year of phenol and 114,000 tonnes/year of acetone. The plant was running at full capacity after the earthquake, the source said.

The other plant is a joint venture between Mitsui and Idemitsu Kosan, with a 230,000 tonne/year capacity for phenol and can produce 138,000 tonnes/year of acetone. The unit was taken off line since a 9-magnitude quake struck Japan’s northeast coast on Friday, the source said.

The unit was expected to remain off line for one week due to unspecified damages, the source added.
