Japan’s JX Nippon Oil assesses impact of benzene plant shutdown

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--JX Nippon Oil & Energy is assessing the impact of the shutdown of its benzene plants at Kashima and Kawasaki in the aftermath of the massive earthquake on 11 March, a company source said on Monday.

“At this moment, we don’t know what is the impact. We’re gathering information on the impact,” the source said.

The Kashima and Kawasaki plants have the capacity to produce more than 190,000 tonnes/year of benzene, he said.

The producer has not declared force majeure on its benzene supply and is not ready to comment on this matter now, he added.

JX Nippon Oil & Energy is Japan’s largest benzene producer.
