SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Major chemical ports in the western and central parts of Japan are running normally, but those on the country’s northeast coast remain shut, a shipping agent said on Tuesday.
A company official at Wilhelmsen Ships Service in Tokyo told ICIS that the ports of Kashima and Sendai are still shut, while the port of Chiba in central Japan is open.
However, Cosmo Oil has not yet extinguished a fire at its 220,000 bbl/day refinery at the port in Chiba.
The fire at the refinery’s storage tanks broke out after the massive earthquake on Friday.
Meanwhile, the chemical ports on Japan’s western coast were running “normally”.
Communication with local harbour masters was difficult because of the disruptions in telecommunications, said the official, adding the company is monitoring the situation closely.
