SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Sinopec will ramp up production of paraxylene (PX) beyond its full capacity at four of its China-based facilities and will increase contract allocations to customers in the second quarter of the year, an official said on Tuesday.

“Operating rates at Yangzi Petrochemical, Tianjin Petrochemical, Luoyang Petrochemical and Qilu Petrochemical will be raised beyond 100%,” the Sinopec official said in mandarin.

Sinopec can produce a total of 1.51m tonnes of PX per annum at the above-mentioned four locations and supplies domestic purified terephthalic acid (PTA) makers such as Mitsubishi Ningbo, BP Zhuhai, Shaoxing Yuandong Petrochemical and Yisheng Petrochemical.

“We will also try to increase operating rates at Zhenhai Petrochemical but it remains uncertain if we can achieve this at this point in time,” the official said, adding that Zhenhai had previously experienced technical difficulties at its 650,000 tonne/year PX unit.

“We will also increase contracted-volume customers, depending on their requirements,” the Sinopec official added.

Runs rates at both Jinling Petrochemical and Shanghai Petrochemical were already been raised beyond 100% in February as domestic demand for PX was robust.

Jinling Petrochemical and Shanghai Petrochemical have a combined nameplate capacity of 1.6m tonnes/year.
