JAPAN DISASTER: Japan Polypropylene’s Kashima site badly damaged

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Japan Polypropylene’s production site at Kashima has been badly affected by the tsunami triggered by the 11 March earthquake with major infrastructural reconstruction required, but the polypropylene (PP) plant itself may not be as seriously damaged, a company source said.

“Basic infrastructure at the site is badly damaged and we’ll need time to restore that, but damage at the PP plants may not be as serious,” the source said.

Japan Polypropylene’s PP facilities at Kashima have a combined capacity of 346,000 tonnes/year.

The producer’s PP facilities at Goi with a total capacity of 323,000 tonnes/year were shut after a neighbouring refinery operated by Cosmo Oil caught fire in the aftermath of the earthquake, he said.

The extent of the damage at the Goi PP plants were unclear because access to the site was still restricted, he said.

Propylene supply to the Goi PP plants was disrupted when its feedstock supplier Maruzen Petrochemical shut its cracker, he added.
