JAPAN DISASTER: Death toll rises to 6,539

HOUSTON (ICIS)--The death toll for Japan's 9.0-magnitude earthquake has reached 6,539 people, with 10,354 missing and 2,513 injured, the Washington Post reported on Friday.

Meanwhile, the nation continued to struggle to avert a major crisis its Fukushima Daiichi nuclear complex.

Last week's earthquake and tsunami knocked out power to the complex's reactors, causing them to overheat.

Workers have connected nuclear reactor No 2 to a transmission line, and it would try to restore power, ABC News reported.

If workers cannot restore the plant's power, they may bury the complex in sand and concrete, ABC News reported.

Japan has since raised the severity rating of the crisis to 5 from 4 on a 7-point scale.
