ExxonMobil Singapore worker dies; refinery turnaround halted

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--An ExxonMobil worker in Singapore died late on 28 March more than an hour after having been found unconscious, along with one other, at the company’s refinery site in Jurong, the company said on Tuesday.

The two workers were found unconscious at 19:30 Singapore time on Monday and immediately taken to the hospital, ExxonMobil said in a statement.

One of them, a 34-year old Indian national, died at about 21:00, while the other was in critical condition, the company said.

These contractors were doing maintenance works in “an enclosed space filled with nitrogen”, ExxonMobil said.

“We are cooperating with the authorities to investigate the cause of the incident

"Meanwhile, as a result of this incident, all work relating to the turnaround at the Jurong Refinery has been suspended,” the company said.
