LCY Chem runs Jiangsu MIBK plant at 50% on feedstock shortage

SINGAPORE (ICIS)--Taiwan’s LCY Chemical is operating its 24,000 tonne/year methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) plant in Jiangsu province, China, at 50% capacity because of tight feedstock supply and weak downstream demand, a company source said on Tuesday.

The plant was running at 60-70% capacity last week, the source added.

A local hydrogen producer has been facing problems at its plant and that has resulted in the disruption of feedstock supply, according to the source.

Meanwhile, weak demand from the downstream tyre and industrial paint sectors had also prompted LCY Chemical to reduce the plant's operating rates, said the source.

It was unclear when normal production would be resumed, the source said.

MIBK is used in the production of rubber chemicals and as a solvent in paints and pharmaceuticals.
