Huntsman picks Foster to work on China isocyanates expansion

TORONTO (ICIS)--Huntsman has chosen petrochemicals engineering firm Foster Wheeler to work on a planned isocyanates expansion near Shanghai, Foster said on Thursday.

Foster, which will be in charge of front-end engineering design, said the project is scheduled for mechanical completion by the fourth quarter of 2013. It did not disclose financial or capacity details.

Huntsman said last month it expects to make a final decision on the methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) expansion in Caojing, near Shanghai, by the middle of 2011 as Chinese authorities still had to grant approvals.

As earlier reported by ICIS, Huntsman plans to build a second 240,000 tonne/year MDI plant in Caojing.

In related news, Dow Chemical’s CEO, Andrew Liveris, said recently his company may pursue MDI projects in China and Saudi Arabia as it responds to tight supplies.
