TORONTO (ICIS)--Lucite International plans to start up production of methacrylic acid (MAA) at its site in Texas in the fourth quarter of 2012, the company said on Friday.

Lucite said it is making a “significant investment” in MAA production at Beaumont, Texas, where it produces methyl methacrylate monomer (MMA). It did not disclose capacity or financial details.

Last year, Lucite ceased MAA production at a plant in West Virginia but continued to supply product to the Americas from its plants in other regions.

"The decision to invest in MAA production is another boost for our Beaumont site, which recently restarted MMA production and has benefited from ongoing investment," said Neil Sayers, president of Lucite Americas.

"We are delighted that we will be in a position to support the future demand of our customers from a new and efficient production asset," he added.

Lucite's MMA plant at Beaumont employs a workforce of more than 100 employees. Lucite restarted MMA production at the site earlier this year. The plant was idled in December 2008, when demand slowed during the global economic recession.
