HOUSTON (ICIS)--US March auto sales of passenger cars and light trucks increased 17% year on year, according to sales data released on Friday by Autodata.

The US automobile industry is a major demand segment for chemicals such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene butadiene rubber (SBR), nylon 6,6 and several other synthetic fibres and paints and coatings.

The American Chemistry Council (ACC) estimates that each automobile contains an average of $2,700 (€1,890) worth of chemicals.

US auto sales totalled 1,246,623 units in March, up from 1,066,205 units in the same month one year ago.

The biggest jump among the biggest six US manufacturers - General Motors, Ford, Chrylser, US Honda, US Toyota and US Nissan - came from Chrysler.

The company’s year-on-year sales increased by 31.4%, up to 121,730 units from 92,623 units a year ago.

“Our pickups and sport-utilities have been strong performers in the market, and now we are seeing our cars gaining momentum in the marketplace as well,” said Chrysler lead executive for US sales Fred Diaz.

Of the big six, five saw year-on-year increases, ranging between Chrylser’s high and a low of 9.9% from General Motors.

Only US Toyota saw a decline, down to 176,222 units in March 2011 from 186,863 units for the same month a year ago, a drop of 5.7%.

“With improving purchase intentions and healthy inventory levels heading into April, we feel confident about our sales outlook for the month ahead,” said US Toyota vice president and general manager Bob Carter.

Month on month, US auto sales increased by 25.5%, up from 993,387 units in February 2011.

US auto sales are expected to dip in the second quarter because of supply disruptions from key parts suppliers from Japan after the earthquake and tsunami there.
