LONDON (ICIS)--BASF has opened its new polyurethane (PU) system house in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), the company said on Thursday.

The facility is located in the chemical business zone of Dubai Industrial City, between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

BASF’s acquisition of Multi Chemical’s PU system house in Abu Dhabi in 2008 – a joint venture with UAE-based The Kanoo Group – was the German chemical giant’s first step into the Gulf region.

The company also recently opened a system house in Srem, central Poland, and has announced it will build two more in China's municipalities of Chongqing and Tianjing.

Last month, BASF received government approval for a new 400,000 tonne/year methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) project in Chongqing, which is expected to start production in 2014.

PU is used in lightweight cars, building insulation and the production of shoes, mattresses, household goods and sports equipment.
