SHANGHAI (ICIS)--Three children were fatally poisoned in Pingliang city, Gansu province, after drinking milk tainted with nitrite, Xinhua News Agency said on Friday.

Nitrite is a chemical used to make dyes and to preserve meats.

According to the report, another 35 children are still in hospital on 8 April, and most of them are below the age of 14.

The milk came from two local dairy farms, which were closed soon after the incident.

The source of the nitrite is still under investigation.
