SINGAPORE (ICIS)--South Korea’s S-Oil has achieved on-spec production of paraxylene (PX) and benzene at its new aromatics facility in Onsan, a company official said on Monday.

The unit can produce up to 300,000 tonnes/year of benzene and 900,000 tonnes/year of PX, the official added.

“They’ve [S-Oil] communicated to us that they have achieved on-spec production in the week to 8 April,” said a major PX buyer.

Another major end-user said S-Oil could be delivering up to 70% of the unit’s total production capacity in May. The company can produce up to 75,000 tonnes/month of PX.

S-Oil also operates a 700,000 tonne/year PX unit at the same site and is now the country’s largest producer of the feedstock for purified terephthalic acid (PTA) with the start-up of its new unit.

The other major producer of PX in South Korea is GS Caltex, which can produce up to 1.35m tonnes/year of the material.
