LONDON (ICIS)--Perstorp expects to start up its delayed di-propyl heptyl phthalate (DPHP) plasticiser project in ?xml:namespace>
Jerker Olsson, manager of the Sweden-based company’s oxo business, said the project was delayed by about two and a half years to allow investments by raw material supplier, Borealis, and as a result of the global economic crisis.
The project, which will include production of intermediates valeraldehyde and 2-propyl heptanol (2-PH) alcohol, was originally scheduled to start up in 2011.
Start-up of the new project will coincide with the supply of C4-based raffinate 2 raw materials from Borealis’ cracker complex at the Stenungsund site, Olsson said in a telephone interview. “They will not be ready until the first half of 2014,” he added.
The project will have the capacity to produce more than 100,000 tonnes/year of 2-PH alcohol, most of which will be converted into DPHP, Olsson said. He estimates the DPHP capacity at more than 70,000 tonnes/year.
The project will be slightly smaller than originally planned. When it was first announced in 2007, Perstorp said the project would have a DPHP capacity of 100,000 tonnes/year and cost €175m ($250m).
Olsson declined to comment on the investment cost of the revised project.
Perstorp said in a statement that the investment is one of the largest in its history and will meet strong demand for DPHP. DPHP is expected to become a key mainstream high molecular weight plasticiser, used in polyvinyl chloride (PVC), it added.
