US February melamine imports rise 13% month on month

HOUSTON (ICIS)--US imports of melamine in February increased 13% from January, according to data released on Tuesday by the US International Trade Commission (ITC).

Imports of melamine totalled 3,366 tonnes in February, a 13% increase from the 2,974 tonnes imported in January, and an increase of 140% from the 1,405 tonnes imported in February 2010, the ITC said.

China, at 1,524 tonnes, was the major source for melamine. Other suppliers of imports included Indonesia at 840 tonnes, Trinidad at 540 tonnes, Germany at 380 tonnes and the Netherlands at 82 tonnes.

US exports of melamine totalled 2,320 tonnes in February, a decrease of 14% from the 2,683 tonnes exported in January.

Destinations for US melamine included Russia, Canada, Norway, the United Kingdom, Germany, Spain, Sweden, Mexico and Colombia.

The US also exported 2,395 tonnes of melamine resins in February, an increase from the 2,334 tonnes exported in January.

Major destinations for resins included China, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, India, Taiwan, South Korea, Belgium, Singapore and Australia.

Cornerstone Chemical is the only US producer of melamine.
