CHINESE CAUSTIC SODA CONSTRUCTION STARTS

China Haohua Chemical, a wholly state-owned chemical enterprise group based in Beijing, has started building an 800,000 tonne/year caustic soda plant in southwestern Guizhou province. The first phase of the project, which will yield initial output of 300,000 tonnes/year of caustic soda, will take 18 months to complete and cost yuan (CNY) 3bn ($458m, €317m). The company did not provide dates for the remaining capacity.

INEOS WINS CHLORINE TECH ORDER FROM OLIN

UK-based INEOS Technologies has been selected by US chlor-alkali producer Olin to replace its mercury-based electrolysis process in Charleston, Tennessee, US, with INEOS's Bichlor membrane chlorine technology. The technology is designed to minimize the lifetime costs of manufacturing chlorine, sodium/potassium hydroxide and hydrogen.

AKZONOBEL SHUTS FRANKFURT CHLORINE

Dutch producer AkzoNobel will shut its 167,000 tonne/year chlorine and derivatives plant in Frankfurt, Germany, for up to a week starting May 17, a company source said. AkzoNobel's supplies have been on strict allocation mainly because its biggest chlorine plant in Botlek, Rotterdam, the Netherlands, with capacity of 633,000 tonnes/year, is in a four-week shutdown.
