LANXESS EXPANDS IN GERMANY AND US
Germany's LANXESS has started to expand its hydrogenated nitrile butadiene rubber (HNBR) production in Leverkusen, Germany, and Orange, Texas, US. The producer said the expansion will increase capacity by 40%, with the Leverkusen work scheduled for completion by April 2012 and the Orange work scheduled for completion by December 2012. "LANXESS will invest a low single-digit million euro amount in the expansion," the company said. The global HNBR rubber market is growing at a double-digit annual rate, driven by strong automotive demand in China and India, LANXESS said.
SOCC AWARDS CONTRACT FOR AL-JUBAIL PROJECT
Saudi Organometallic Chemicals Co. (SOCC) has selected South Korea's Samsung Engineering to build its aluminium alkyls plant in Al-Jubail, Saudi Arabia. SOCC is a 50-50 joint venture between SABIC affiliate Saudi Specialty Chemical Co. and Albemarle. Samsung Engineering will provide engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) services for the project, which will initially manufacture 6,000 tonnes/year of tri-ethyl aluminum, the key co-catalyst used in polyolefin production. Mechanical completion is expected in the third quarter of 2012.
ARKEMA TO BUILD BIO-METHIONINE PLANT
French specialties producer Arkema and South Korea-based bioscience firm CJ CheilJedang have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a $400m (€276m) bio-methionine and thiochemicals facility in Southeast Asia. The 80,000 tonne/year facility will be located in Malaysia or Thailand and is scheduled to come on stream at the end of 2013. The investment cost will be split equally between the two firms.
