GUANGZHOU (ICIS)--Sinopec said on Tuesday it has completed construction of its gas-based 1,000 tonne/year demonstration monoethylene glycol (MEG) plant at Nanjing in China's eastern Jiangsu province.

The company invested yuan (CNY) 115m ($17.6m) to build the unit, which will be operated by its subsidiary, Yangzi Petrochemical.

The plant will use carbon oxygen and hydrogen mixtures as feedstock, Sinopec said.

“Operation of the unit would start soon,” said a source from Yangzi Petrochemical but he declined to provide a specific date.

“It’s a research and development (R&D) project and whether a commercial scale plant would be built [will] depend on [the]performance of the demonstration unit,” said the source.
