HOUSTON (ICIS)--Solutia has opened a facility to produce ethylene vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA) encapsulants for use in solar modules at Suzhou, China, the US-based chemicals producer said on Thursday.
Solutia said the facility would strengthen its position to supply solar encapsulants to Chinese photovoltaic firms, which are producing more than half of all modules installed globally.
“By investing directly into China, our ability to reduce the total cost of production and enhance our service levels to Chinese module manufacturers is greatly improved,” Christopher Reed, Solutia’s photovoltaic business director, said.
The project is Solutia’s first new EVA production facility since its acquisition of Germany’s ETIMEX Solar last year. Financial details were not disclosed.
Solutia also produces encapsulants in Germany, Belgium, the US, Mexico and Brazil.
At Suzhou, Solutia also produces polyvinyl butyral films.
