SINGAPORE (ICIS)--America's most wanted fugitive, Osama Bin Laden, is dead and the US is in possession of the body, President Barack Obama announced on television in an address to the nation late on Sunday.

Bin Laden was killed in a special operation deep inside Pakistan, Obama said, describing it as the most significant achievement in the war against terror to date.

Obama said US forces led the operation that killed Bin Laden.

"The United States has conducted an operation that killed Osama Bin Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda and a terrorist who is responsible for the murder of thousands of men, women and children," Obama said in the telecast.

Besides September 11, Bin Laden has also been linked to a string of attacks, including the 2000 bombing of the warship USS Cole in Yemen and the 1998 bombings of American embassies in Tanzania and Kenya.
