SHANGHAI (ICIS)--A total of 2.8m tonnes/year of new purified terephthalic acid (PTA) capacity will come on line in China in the third quarter of this year, according to an industry analyst on Friday.

Yisheng Dahua is to increase its PTA capacity by 700,000 tonnes/year, Yisheng Petrochemical will raise its by 1.5m tonnes/year and Jiangsu Hailun will have a 600,000 tonne/year increase, said Gao Jianjiang, a senior analyst with China Chemical Fibres & Textiles Consultancy.

Yisheng Dahua's and Yisheng Petrochemical’s new capacities will come on stream by July, while Jiangsu Hailun’s will start up in July or August, said Gao.

The new PTA capacity additions are not expected to lead to oversupply in the market, as there will also be capacity additions in the downstream polyester sector during that period to absorb the additional PTA capacity, Gao noted.

Around 1.5m tonnes/year of polyester capacity will come on line in the third quarter and 1.4m tonnes/year will come on line in the fourth quarter, he said.

Gao said the capacity figures and start-up dates are based on information supplied by the companies.
