LONDON (ICIS)--Hungary-based BorsodChem will start the debottlenecking and annual maintenance of its main methyl di-p-phenylene isocyanate (MDI) plant in Kazincbarcika?xml:namespace>
The revamp would boost production capacity at the MDI M2 facility from 150,000 tonne/year to 240,000 tonne/year, giving the company an overall MDI capacity of 300,000 tonne/year when taking into account the potential output of the MDI M1 plant, also at the Hungarian site, BorsodChem added.
“BorsodChem is the only European manufacturer that will increase its capacity of MDI this year and together with the 800,000 tonne/year MDI capacity of [China-based] sister company Yantai Wanhua Polyurethanes, the overall [parent company] Wanhua Industrial Group will advance to become the world’s number three MDI manufacturer,” the company said.
BorsodChem added that the company would “endeavour to reduce the impact” of any disruption to the business caused by the revamp, despite it happening during a period of lower market demand.
In apologising for the likely difficulties and inconveniences ahead, the company added that "this significant investment for future growth in production capacity, product quality and service capabilities is necessary to satisfy the anticipated needs in the polyurethanes (PU) market in the years to come".
