Japan’s Toray Industries to increase PPS capacity at Tokai plant

TOKYO (ICIS)--Japanese chemical producer, Toray Industries, plans to increase the capacity at its polyphenylene sulphide (PPS) plant at Tokai in Aichi prefecture by 5,000 tonnes/year to meet the increasing demand, the company said in a statement on Thursday.

The increased capacity will boost the company’s production capacity of torelina, a PPS resin, to 19,000 tonnes/year, the company added.

The new 5,000 tonne/year unit is scheduled to come on stream in January 2013, according to the statement.

PPS is a “super engineering plastic” that is durable and resists heat, chemicals and flames. It is used to manufacture parts in automobiles, electrical and electronic products as well as in housing construction, the company said.

Global demand for such PPS compounds was estimated at 75,000 tonnes/year in 2010 and demand is expected to increase by 7% per annum, Toray said.

Toray is also considering further expansions of its PPS production capacity, but did not provide any details.

Other producers of PPS resin in Japan include Idemitsu Kosan and Kureha.
