Cables for Petrobras's Comperj to be on site by start of 2012

PORTO ALEGRE, Brazil (ICIS)--Power cables should be on site at Petrobras's Rio de Janeiro Petrochemical Complex (Comperj) by the start of 2012, the company installing the cables said on Thursday.
The installation includes laying cable on the pipe rack and mounting accessories, said Nexans, a company based in France that won the contract for Comperj's power cables.
Earlier this year, Nexans won the multimillion-euro contract by Toshiba Sistemas de Transmissao e Distribuicao do Brasil to supply and install high-voltage cross-linked polyethelene (XLPE) cables and accessories.
The cables will connect the two main electrical substations at Comperj.
Petrobras plans to start up Comperj's steam cracker at the end of 2016, with the downstream units – for polyolefins, styrene and monoethylene glycol (MEG) – scheduled to start up at the beginning of 2017.
The cracker will have a capacity of 1.07m tonnes/year. The capacities of the downstream polyethylene (PE), polypropylene (PP), styrene and MEG units have not yet been defined.
The refinery part of the Comperj project is already underway. One 165,000 bbl/day refinery project is under construction, and Petrobras plans to build a second refinery of the same size. The refineries will use petrochemical fluidised catalytic cracking technology.
