HOUSTON (ICIS)--Momentive Performance Materials has begun work on expanding its ceramic powders production capacity at its plant in Strongsville, Ohio, the US-based producer said on Friday.

The $5.8m (€4.0m) project will expand the plant’s boron nitride powder capacity by 50% on completion in December 2011, US-based Momentive said.

The expansion includes the addition of 6,000 square feet of production space and the installation of special equipment to produce and refine specialty boron nitride powders, Momentive said. It did not disclose capacities in terms of tonnes or pounds per year.

Boron nitride powder is used in the semiconductor and other electronics industries, as well as in plastics and cosmetics applications.

Momentive Performance Materials, along with sister company of Momentive Specialty Chemicals, is controlled by private equity firm Apollo.
