SINGAPORE (ICIS)--South Korea’s Tongsuh Petrochemical has ramped up the operating rate at its expanded No 3 acrylonitrile (ACN) plant to 85% capacity, after restarting it on 10 June following a month-long turnaround, a company source said on Monday.

The company shut its No 2 and No 3 ACN plants at Ulsan in South Korea on 13 May for annual maintenance.

“We have debottlenecked the No 3 plant and added another 15,000 tonnes/year to [the capacity to raise it to] 245,000 tonnes/year during the turnaround,” the source said.

The company is now operating its 70,000 tonne/year No 2 ACN plant at full rate, according to the company source.

Tongsuh Petrochemical can now produce 315,000 tonnes/year of ACN as compared with its previous capacity of 300,000 tonnes/year, prior to the turnaround.

Its 50,000 tonne/year No 1 ACN plant was mothballed in 2002.

Tongsuh Petrochemical is a wholly owned subsidiary of Japan’s major ACN producer, Asahi Kasei.
