LONDON (ICIS)--Genomatica has successfully produced bio-butanediol (BDO) at demonstration-scale through a partnership with UK-based food ingredients producer Tate & Lyle, the US biochemical company said on Tuesday.

The production of BDO from renewable feedstock was performed in a 13,000 litre tank at Tate & Lyle’s facility in Decatur, Illinois.

“We expect to be in commercial production in late 2012, with world-scale plants in the US, Europe and Asia starting in 2014,” said Christophe Schilling, CEO of Genomatica.

The company added that continued success during the demonstration-scale stage will validate the design and basic engineering package for construction of the first commercial-scale plant.

“We are very pleased with the rapid scale-up of the bio-BDO demonstration project at our Decatur plant,” said Matt Wineinger, president of bulk ingredients at Tate & Lyle.

In April, Genomatica signed a broad strategic partnership with Italian polyethylene terephthalate (PET) producer Mossi & Ghisolfi (M&G) to produce sustainable chemicals from biomass.

The partnership includes the development of a process for manufacturing BDO from biomass, which is at pilot stage in a research and development facility in Rivalta, northern Italy, owned by Chemtex, M&G’s global engineering and technology division.
