SHANGHAI (ICIS)--China’s Baling Petrochemical, a subsidiary of Sinopec, is planning to start up its 120,000 tonne/year styrene monomer (SM) plant in November this year at Yueyang in Hunan province, a source close to the company said on Monday.

The company started building the plant in the third quarter of 2009 and will start its test runs in November this year, the source added.

In addition, the company will start a test run at its 200,000 tonne/year caprolactam (capro) unit in late 2011, the source said.

SM is mainly used in the manufacture of homopolymers and copolymers, which include polystyrene (PS), expandable polystyrene (EPS), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resins and unsaturated polyester resins (UPR).

Capro is an intermediate material, which is primarily used in the production of nylon 6 (polyamide 6) fibres and resins.
